I want to watch! But I don't have tv! crepe.

You really think it's cool for you to hit the sauce with a bun in the oven?

I think she's likely to be relatively fair. She's come a long way recently.

Totally tivoing this one, and making my mother watch it! My mom's of the "I wish I could be vegetarian, but I don't think I have the will power" crowd, and I'm determined smile

I hope I can get my mum to watch this... assuming it isn't "happy meat"ish, of course....

ugh, i agree kp.  i feel like this will be one big welfarist orgy with all the happy meat spokespeople spewing their bullshiitake to an audience that will feel even better about eating happy meat.  oprah keeps teasing us with pro-vegan exposure... but nothing ever really changes.

Re: Oprah on how we treat animals raised for food Tues. 10/14/08

Awesome. I wasn't supposed to say anything about Oprah doing a show on this for some reason, so I'm glad someone else did. I think it will be good, either way. I don't think there's any way for her to avoid the main part; cruelty.

My favorite words in this thread are "welfarist" and "happy meat". Two most over-used phrases in the animal rights movement. Quit it already!

If we are, then so is AV and chatter710- we were just having the "are we related" conversation the other day in the undecideds thread!!

Edited to make the post clearer.

I haven't watched Oprah in years. Maybe I'll watch this one. I hope it'll actually help the cause.

Maybe you need to videotape it and censor it before letting non-veg family members watch it?  So you're ready to cheer/boo at the right moments?

Re: Oprah on how we treat animals raised for food Tues. 10/14/08

i personally tend to think of Oprah as the unforgivable spawn of Satan who only tries to do "good" things for people to hide the fact that she is interminably taking over the world one TV station and yo-yo diet at a time.

however, i think i'll tune into this one.

Re: Oprah on how we treat animals raised for food Tues. 10/14/08

Oprah did a really good episode on puppy mills, that advocated getting animals from the shelter and not from the pet store (apart from one pet store that doubled as a shelter, if I remember correctly).

Yeah, it was a pretty good episode, about the puppy mills, and while I didn't necessarily like the pet store/sheler, it certainly didn't preach pet stores in any way.

what? you're mad that oprah doesn't convince the world overnight to go vegan? Who would you rather be on Oprah, Rod Coronado? Would that be better for the animals, would that lead us to a more vegan society, would that change hearts and minds?

HSUS is far better equipped and is doing a lot more than a few vegans with their thumb up their asparagi whining about those "welfarists"

Re: Oprah on how we treat animals raised for food Tues. 10/14/08

Nicholas Kristoff is pro-Proposition 2 and said he will be on Oprah on 10/14.  His take is that vegetarianism is the right thing to do, but he can't quite bring himself to do it, so he draws the line at consuming meat from animals that were cruelly raised.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/31/opini … istof.html

You have to remember who Oprah's audience is.  She's doing a lot of good by raising issues in a way that the audience can "get" and sensitizes people to animal cruelty.  Given how large her sphere of influence is, and how easy it would be for her to say "I'm not perfect, so I'm not going to say anything" I think its great that she's having this show.
