EAT: NEW MENU ON BOTTOM OF PAGE 2.
The same person commented on both Get Sconed! and Stumptown Vegans this weekend that sadly, Nutshell has gone from vegan to vegetarian.
this was on my blog -
"This post inspired me to eat dinner at Nutshell tonight, but I was shocked and disappointed to see that they have added dairy and eggs to the menu within the last few days! The menu is now "tapas style", and we were told the change was due to "popular demand". Most items can still be prepared vegan, but nearly everything listed now contains cheese or eggs. There also is no longer a bread/salt/oil menu. I'm so sad to see this change."
comment on SV here..

so what do you guys think? I can assume they're not happy thoughts. Business did not seem to be that happening and the foie gras controversy is ugly.
Personally I still supported them because I appreciated what they brought to the vegan restaurant scene in Portland. I felt as though their menu style and dishes were impressive.
I'm lucky to have gone last week before this change..the website menu has not been updated and I am curious to see it.

Sad. I liked them despite their service and it was exciting to have a "fancy" place to go and celebrate at. There are tons of vegan and vegan friendly places here, but when you want something impressive and foodie Nutshell was pretty much it, or calling all over trying to find someplace that would accommodate you.
Maybe they will change their minds?
I also wonder what they meant by not having the support of the vegan community. Was this just the foie gras issue? Did they do any market research to discern why people weren't coming in the numbers that they wanted? For me personally, I didn't go very often because it was so slow, it would take 2 hours to eat dinner there.
edit: I said foie gras tissue instead of issue, which although scientifically accurate, is not what I meant

Ah yes, the service, how can one forget? At least we got stuff for free!
ISA-now you can make a fancy vegan restaurant and have no competition

Yeah! I always hated those popular people with their cheese and eggs and cheerleading.
Good point Bastah, about less competition for Isa's vegan restaurant. But overall I think this is a bummer.

someone scan a menu! I want to see these 'can be made vegan' tapas.

Wow, that really sucks. I was supporting them despite the foie grois and the bad service because there are so few vegan restaurants* in Portland and to agree with Jess, they were really creative and yummy. But now they can forget it. Also, I don't know that I am opening a restaurant here but if I was, I don't mind competition, I like competition, it makes people better at whatever they're doing plus the more vegan restaurants the better.
*It's weird, but true! There are so many vegan options but only what? Like 3 vegan restaurants? Blossoming Lotus, Bye And Bye, Bay Leaf?

Red and Black, Sweetpea (I only eat the brunch so it is a restaurant to me), Veganopolis, Papa G's, Nhut Quang
Bay Leaf isn't vegan, but their eggplant crisps might be my favorite thing anywhere.
I miss Calendula. Damn wobbies, and Craig too for being a bit of a douche.

Isn't Vegetarian House all vegan now too? And what is a wobby/ies?

Vegetarian House is all vegan except for the crab rangoon.
The wobbies are the IWW. There was a labor dispute and they picketed Calendula.

And we're all forgetting that vegan "restaurant" in the NW. But that's intentional.

So now I am trying to brainstorm a place to go with my folks when they want fancy food and are willing to pay for my meal, and all I can think of is The Farm. I'm sure there are other places that have a pretty atmosphere/somewhat gourmet/creative/fancy aspirations and a good vegan plate, right?
eta: or I guess I could go have the vegan tapas at Nutshell, (i need to learn to use my words to express myself.)

I think Blossoming Lotus has a better atmosphere than Nutshell and the prices are comparable. Plus you get free soft serve if you are a member of NW Veg.
Offline
yes, I always think The Farm. swoon. Someone needs to report on these vegan tapas.
re: root's eggplant crisps - is that the one with the Kung Pao sauce or something different? I know I recognize it from the menu..I must check it out, I am a Bay Leaf fan, though I admit some dishes are hit and miss and too plain..

You no longer get soft server at BL for NW Veg - at least that's what they told us last time I went, a couple months ago. The service at BL, as much as I adore them, is laksflskfsldfkf. I want them to have a real restaurant.

Yes, that's the one. And you're right, they could stand to eliminate 1/3 of their menu. When my gf and I go, we make sure that one of us gets something we know we like when the other one tries something new.

The soft serve was included when we went on Sunday and the previous Saturday.
ETA:
Hmm, I just checked the nwveg page and it now says "ask about member specials" instead of "free small soft serve with order." Hopefully they continue to make an exception for me!

I was looking forward to finally trying that place. Oh well.

I've been offered live fudge in the past as a NW Veg member, which is also lovely, but I recall being told there was no member special last time I went. nice to hear that you guys got it though.
Offline
I got nothing yet. I knew they were suspicious!

They haven't updated their online menu yet.

Yeah, and they referred to it when I was on the phone, and I got excited that they really were still vegan. Alas.

Blossoming Lotus is a great supporter of NW VEG in so many ways, but unfortunately they did officially discontinue the dessert specials for members. Some of the servers probably just don't want to disappoint requests - or people who eat there frequently.

I've much preferred the food I've had at The Farm to my visit at Nutshell anyway. I liked what I had at Nutshell, but thought it was kind of overpriced and slightly pretentious, well and the foie gras thing pissed me off. I also like The Farm, because it seriously appeals to my family too (not veg) where they can get fish if they want, but actually chose the veg options on the menu when given the options. My grandpa even had the vegan option (this is a man who once told me that he considers my grandma's lasagna to be the only meatless dish that is actually a real meal)...apparently their tofu marsala changed his mind.
