I have taken to using the same tea bags twice. Sometimes after a used tea bag has been sitting in my cup for...like a day...
Is this horribly unsanitary?

I would guess that a wet tea bag would be a really awesome place for bacteria to hang out and thrive.

I would say that leaving it sitting all day is kinda troublesome, especially if it's warm in your house/wherever you're leaving the tea bag.
But if you're just waiting an hour or two, it's probably okay. I've known people who saved and used the same tea bags for weeks on end, and besides being kinda nutty (we're talking Lipton tea here... c'mon, y'all, it's like 5 cents per bag, you don't NEED to reuse that for a month), they've all been fine. I'm not sure what there is in tea bags for bacteria to thrive on... though there's probably something.

That's what she said.

I tend to re-fill my mug with more hot water using the same tea bag if it's herbal tea. I do it 2-3 times and then I find the flavour goes, and this is within an hour or 2 not morning and then end of the day.

I went to china last year and bought "real" tea, the actual leaves not the cut up stuff. And they said it was ok to use the tea twice, but that was the full tea leaf not the chopped up bits that are in typical bags. But they let the tea leaves dry before reusing. Unless immediately reusing to brew another cup of tea.
I like a strong tea so, if i have to use tea bags or loose chopped tea then I use two or double the amount at a time.

When I think about thrifty, I think about people who reuse teabags over days. But yeah, do hang them out to dry if you are waiting hours between uses.

maybe you could just save them and put them in a sealed container in the fridge then use 2 at once.

In Japan I learned to use the same pot of green tea over and over for days. The last little bit you get is considered the best. And green tea is forking expensive.
That said, I only re-tea with green. Everything else, even the Earl Grey that costs me $30 for a tin, gets one go and that's all.

I've tried to reuse tea bags...but it's kind of flavorless to me, then again I like strong black tea.
I've heard people stick the tea bags in the fridge so they don't get gross...

totally. my dad got me hooked on the most expensive whole leaf green tea you can get in chinatown, so in order to make it last, I use one tea ball full for a whole lot of cups of tea.
when i was in grad school, we had a chinese post-doc who was HORRIFIED that people used green tea leaves once and then threw them away, he said the tea doesn't even taste good until you're on your third cup. i agree.

I re-tea when I wanna cut down on caffeine. Over 90% of the caffeine is released on the first brew, so subsequent brews are ALMOST free of it.

i re-use tea bags like 5-8 times if its cold in my house and i am chugging tea to keep warm. but thats not tea thats been sitting around. also, i like the taste of plain hot water, so i don't really care when the flavor starts to go.
i'm not opposed to re-using tea bags after a day or two, but i don't do it because i never think to. if i did, however, i think i would only do it if the tea bag had dried out [i would take the bag out of the cup and dry it on a paper towel over night or something].
but i eat stuff off of the floor and out of the trash and i just have no fear of bacteria.

I re-use tea bags sometimes when I'm at work. I'll just keep adding hot water to my cup and drink it through the morning. I usually have a big chunk of lemon in there so after a while it's more like hot lemon-water than tea. I wouldn't let a tea bag sit overnight and then use it though.

I've reused the tea bag for another cup, but nowadays I use loose leaf and a cute Beehouse teapot at work & home. Better tea in leaf form too. So I end up drinking a few cups at a time...
