Hubby and I are starting a one month Green Smoothie Challenge tomorrow. For one month we are going to have a 16oz green smoothie everyday (on top of our regular food). Anyway, I thought I would try and inspire a few other people ![]()
Inspired by the blog Happy Foody:
For 30 days, you will commit to this ONE THING:
* Drink a 16 oz. of green smoothie each day…preferably for breakfast.
That’s it! You don’t even need to commit to changing anything else. Just ADD the smoothie. But, for an added bonus, you could add one or more of the following:
* Do some sort of activity every day. This could be an intense workout, or just dancing with your kids around the living room. It could be a 15 minute yoga session or a walk around the block.
* Add a green leafy salad to your lunch or supper.
* Stop drinking pop.
* Cut out all white sugar.
All you need is a blender. Add the ingredients, and add water to the thickness you want (usually about 2 cups)….and blend until REALLY smooth. I know you’ll be amazed at how yummy these are…but if you need it sweeter, just up the quantity of fruit.
Here are a few smoothie recipes to get you started:
Mango-parsley
2 large mangos
1 bunch parsley
Water
Peach-spinach
6 peaches
2 handfuls of spinach leaves
Water
Mango-weeds
2 mangos

I'm already doing smoothies with ETL (or well, my inspired by ETL atm...).
Some of those recipes look delicious!

I'm doing green smoothies to because of ETL. My favorite recipe came from fatfreevegan
1 cup pineapple, frozen, unsweetened
1 cup frozen mango chunks
3 ounces baby spinach leaves (about 2 cups, packed, or as much as your blender will hold)
about 1/2 cup water or other liquid
Good luck!

ahhh green smoothies are delightful. i started drinking one a day and immediately my energy increased and i just generally felt wonderful. i loved smoothies with pineapple, kale, rainbow chard, spinach, apples....and whatever else i had laying around. i would also throw in some ground flax seed and wheat germ
yum. and fruit juice is always good to thin out the smoothie if it's too thick. ahhh now i want one! good luck with the challenge, you'll really enjoy it!

My cynical gene, courtesy of my dad, is flaring up. Not meaning to seem rude, but why are you doing it? Just curious.

Wow. That sounds absolutely perfect. Is this place even remotely close to me?

It's from Leaf Cuisine! The one I go to is in Culver City, and that would be your closest too. The other location is in Sherman Oaks. It's called the Green Lean Scene. More info here.

QFT!! And it's so much easier to make a smoothie w/ a huge amount of greens and some fruit that is blended up and easy to digest than to sit down and try and eat a bowl of greens. I would never have thought of doing it, read about it, tried it and realised how healthy, delicious and refreshing they are. I look fwd to mine every afternoon.

Oh, awesome. I've heard of that place and keep meaning to go. Now I must, even if simply for the smoothie.

Do I need to scald the nettles so that they don't sting anymore?

Cynical of eating greens? WHA?
I love to eat greens and have a green smoothie here and there, but I prefer a big kale (raw) salad or to juice some collards and pears, or some beet greens with carrots, apples, and ginger. Yum!

mmm... i think i am going to do one of these today!
strawberries
banana
raw almond milk
agave

I made my first-ever green smoothie yesterday - a whole load of parsley in with carrots, apple, half a lemon, and some soy yogurt. Very very good. I plan to make another tonight. And yes, this reveals a critical update: I FINALLY CAVED AND BOUGHT A VITAMIX. How did I live without this thing? It was so worth the (painful, even after finding a deal) bite out of my bank acct.

i did it! i lived the dream!

I think I need to do this. I know I do, but I'm not sure how to get started. None of the fruit mentioned is in season here, except for strawberries, and it sounds really expensive, and are the majority of y'all doing this with a blender or a juicer? I have a good blender, but not a juicer.
I think I'm stalling, but encouragement would help.

Do it Kittee - I went through the refrigerator and just tossed in what we had: A couple of carrots and an apple which were a little past prime, the stem parts of a bunch of parsley (which is already up and growing in our garden), a lonely half a lemon, and some soy yogurt. Nothing expensive, nothing bought for the occasion.
I have a bunch of green tops that came from baby daikon radishes that I bought last week, and I am thinking of blending them with lemon and canned tomatoes and a carrot when I get home. The radish greens have a kind of spicy flavor which I think will go well with the other items.
All blender, all the way. No fiber extracted.

I have a hand/immersion blender that came with a beaker for making smoothies, sauces, etc. But, even though it is powerful, I am skeptical of being able to throw some kale into a smoothie with good results. Parsley and spinach are softer and I think it could do those, but I really want to make one with kale. Is kale not as tough as I think? Should I just go for it and worst case, eat it with a spoon?
