This recipe looks really good (veganized, of course), but it calls for 1 Tbsp of fennel seeds and 1 Tbsp of anise seeds... aren't they pretty much the same thing? Isn't it pretty pretentious (in GOURMET magazine, no!) to call for both? Especially when later in the recipe, they call for "fennel bulbs (sometimes called anise)".

They're kinda different. Fennel is earthy licorice and anise is more intense sweet licorice. Not that I don't see what you're saying.
