Has anyone tackled this recipe? I'm very tempted to try it, but fear it might tarnish my pre-vegan memory of the real thing and leave me bitter and disappointed (more so than usual). And sticky, too.
TOP SECRET RECIPES VERSION OF CADBURY'S CREME EGG (VEGANIZED, IN THEORY, ANYWAY, BY BRYANNA CLARK GROGAN)
Here's a little Easter present for you. It's a clone version of the first soft fondant-filled egg candy to hit the market, many Easters ago. Now, because of the success of these chocolates with the orange yolk-colored center, other candy companies have come out with their own milk chocolate eggs. Some are filled with Snickers or Milky Way centers, while others contain peanut butter, coconut, caramel or the same type of fondant center as the original...right down to the colors. These eggs are sold only once a year, for the Easter holiday. And, in that same spirit, this recipe will only be up for a week; so get it while you can or you'll have to wait until next year. Happy Easter, everyone!
1/2 cup light corn syrup (**or brown rice syrup )
1/4 cup Earth Balance Natural Buttery Spread, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 cups powdered beet sugar, or powdered very light unbleached sugar (++See Note above)
4 drops yellow food coloring
2 drops red food coloring
1 12-ounce bags organic vegan chocolate chips
2 tablespoons vegetable shortening (Spectrum, or Smart Balance are non-hydrogenated)
1. Combine the corn syrup, marge, vanilla, and salt in a large bowl. Beat well with an electric mixer until smooth.
2. Add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing by hand after each addition. Mix well until creamy.
3. Remove about 1/3 of the mixture and place it into a small bowl. Add the yellow and red food coloring and stir well to combine.
4. Cover both mixtures and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until firm.
5. When mixtures are firm, roll a small, marble-size ball from the orange filling, and wrap around it a portion of the white filling that is roughly twice the size. Form this filling into the shape of an egg and place it onto a cookie sheet that has been brushed with a light coating of shortening. Repeat for the remaining filling ingredients, then refrigerate these centers for 3-4 hours or until firm.
6. Combine the chocolate chips with the shortening in a glass or ceramic bowl. Microwave chocolate on high speed for 1 minute, then stir and microwave again for 1 more minute, and stir.
7. Use a fork to dip each center into the chocolate, tap the fork on the side of the bowl, then place each candy onto wax paper. Chill.
8. After 1-2 hours of chilling, dip each candy once more and chill for several hours, or until completely firm. (http://www.topsecretrecipes.com) Makes 2 dozen candy eggs.

i made them last year! not her recipe, but a similar one. very messy, but taste like the real thing! there are pics on the old locked food porn thread with my easter basket cake.

god, i used to love these things even though i felt like crepe after eating them.
i have no idea if i'll try these. i kind of want to, but at the same time just thinking about that super sweet middle kind of makes me sick.

Hmm. In theory, it sounds good. The problem is that it appears there isn't going to be enough chocolate around the cream center!

Supercarrot has a recipe (and pictures) somewhere, I think.

I was just planning to make these this weekend! I'm going to try to make half with a caramel "yolk" filling. I'll let you know the results.

You could probably dip them twice or maybe molds would work...

Wow these sound so good - I'm not sure if I'm talented enough in the kitchen to make them myself, though.

is it sad that i want to attempt these just so i can be smug and say 'hah! i made vegan creme eggs!', even though i don't like chocolate, and even thinking about smelling creme eggs is making me want to puke?

I made these last year off of a similar recipe (an unvegan one that I veganized).
I dipped 3-4 times per egg to get enough chocolate.
They're a lot of "steps" but actually are surprisingly easy.
I made them over the course of two days, since I didn't have enough time to do them all at once.
And yeah, they're awesome. I'm so making them again this year.

I was addicted to these before becoming vegan... you are my hero!!! and I mean that

I'm really wanting to try these, but I don't know if I have the wherewithall. I'm lazy.

I'm thinking of trying (with brown rice syrup and no food coloring), but it won't be 'til after Passover if I do. I've never had a Cadbury Creme Egg, so I'm just hoping I'll like them.

do they look pretty and egg-like like the real thing?I don't think I wanna make em if they'll be ugly or sloppy.

as long as the filling is chilly, and the chocolate at the right temperature, the chocolate shell will go on nice and thick. promise.

I really want someone braver than I to try these and post a picture, so that I can then muster up the courage to try them myself. I used to loooove these things!
And I have some corn syrup that should probably be used at some point. It's the dark kind, but that doesn't make a huge flavor difference, right? Just color? I'm kind of a corn syrup amateur. Which is probably a good thing.

I didn't use that specific recipe but I did make vegan cadbury creme eggs last year.
Its ridiculously easy. Mine were a little lumpy looking because I suck at making anything circular/egg shaped, but it wasn't messy.
Offline
Mine were egg shaped, but sort of flat. They looked more like egg shaped york patties, or the specialty Reeses Peanut Butter "eggs" than cadbury eggs... but this also helped balance the filling-to-chocolate ratio, so I didn't mind.

the thought of these gives me the shivers. the real ones always creeped me out.

Haha...that's actually close to my motivation. I hated the eggs as a kid, but I always thought they looked cool.

Does the inside taste like caramel?
