EDIT:
this has become a long winded thread about the planning and details of the bake sale. official event thread is here: http://www.postpunkkitchen.com/forum/vi … ?id=111311

I'm into it! What about somewhere like UBC campus? I'm not familiar with the ins and outs on how to arrange something like that, but I could inquire with the Student Union building which is insanely busy all day long on weekdays. Or wherever really...I was just thinking the university (we could do SFU too) because of the guaranteed traffic. Yay! Some of my colleagues in my program and I are putting on a by-donation literary reading for Haiti. I'll let you guys know the deets on that when we hammer them out if you're interested.
What date are you thinking?

i've never done anything like this before and i'm totally stumped on what kind of venue would be appropriate, but i was thinking that a university would be a good idea because of the volume traffic, too. but then i also thought about how university students are probably already probably the most bombarded demographic in terms of donating and fundraising.... but on the other hand, they are also the demographic most in need of vegan baked goods! and i really can't think of anywhere else to hold a bake sale besides markets. i work weekends, (but i would most likely get a shift covered if i need to) and i'm too busy next week to get anything together, but after the 25th i'm pretty much available whenever. what days are you guys free?
yay! i'm glad you're on board, vijita and notjosh!

I think UBC would be great...they're selling random shiitake in the SUB every single day and I'm always amazed by how many rich students are buying new wardrobes and posters. At least we'll be able to appeal to the conscientious students, and though UBC doesn't have a HUGE vegan population, there are thousands of people concerned with food security and such that can get behind the vegan thing. We'd have to do it on a weekday though because there's no one around on weekends. Would that work for you guys? I have a thesis meeting on Monday and I can inquire about setting up in the SUB. Maybe the 29th could work? (it's a Friday). I can't really do Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays, so if we could do it on a Tuesday or Friday that'd be awesome.
I think I might be able to convince some non-vegan friends to buck up and bake some vegan treats as well. Yay!
ETA: So I just emailed a bunch of student union contacts inquiring about setting up in the SUB. Hopefully something will come of that!
I encourage all of you other Vancouver people to get in on this! ![]()

29th works for me! any weekday does. thanks for emailing subs! let me know what you hear back. i guess there's not really anything i can do to help out until then.... hopefully i can convince my non-vegan pals to help out too. which group do you think the proceeds should go to? there is a list of organizations here: http://www.ctvbc.ctv.ca/servlet/an/loca … lumbiaHome

if the university idea doesn't work out, there is the new community center at broadway and kingsway. that might be another option....
Offline
I'm leaning towards the Humanitarian Coalition because my little sister works for Oxfam and they do amazing things. But whatever you like is fine too!
I wonder if we might even approach Choices or somewhere to donate ingredients. Choices seem pretty committed to community. May be worth a try.
If the 29th works for josh I say we go for it. We'd probably do best to start around 11 and go until we sell out. I put down that date as a possibility in my emails. The community centre would be great too...that's a popular area so we'd just have to advertise properly. The great thing about UBC is that we won't need to advertise much.
I've started freelancing for Beyond Robson so I'll try to get something up on there.

humanitarian coalition sounds good to me. i like having a first hand account that the charity we donate to actually does good work. and i'm definitely not comfortable supporting a religious organization.
ingredient donations would be amazing! we should definitely try!
the nice thing about mount pleasant community center for me is that it's actually in my community, and it would be nice to do something in the neighbourhood where more people i know would be able to participate and get involved.... i'm just not sure how successful a bake sale on a weekday would be there and you're right about not really needing to advertise at UBC. i'm too foggy headed to send a coherent email to the community center right now. maybe we'll wait to hear back from the universities before we pursue the option further.
beyond robson is a good way to get the word out. and we can make a facebook event of course....

wee!
I'm freelancin', so 29th works a-okay for me.
as for who should get the money, it seems a few organisations are announcing dollar-for-dollar matching of donations, too. I like it when bigbiz shells out of their own pocket, so when the time comes it might be worth looking into that (i.e. Koodo are matching if you txt a certain number, etc). personally, I'm partially to doctors without borders, but I'm not going to argue against the humanitarian coalition.
I think a student-centric area is a good place to focus, yeah. it's quite centralised and predictably high traffic (for a weekday), and not likely to be too freaked out by "vegan" or something not being wrapped in plastic. they're also the least likely group to be concerned that we're not "official", as there's always news reports of scammers etc.
actually, on the 'scammers' subject, is that ever a big deal around here? at home people get put off more than you'd think. if we agree on a charity, we can probably contact them and see if they'll give us a collector's authorisation (or similar, I'm sure it exists?) just to cover our asparagi in case people ask.

i'm so happy you're free on the 29th! things seem to be coming along quite nicely. i agree that a university is best under these circumstances since we want to put this together quickly and be visible to as many people as possible to raise lots of cash fast! i'm just trying to brainstorm other ideas in case it doesn't pan out....
as far as people worrying about whether or not we're legit, i don't think that's to much of a concern. i think people are more wary when it's random people just asking for cash donations, but a bunch of bleeding heart vegans who obviously spent a lot of time producing a product to sell for a good cause shouldn't weird anyone out. getting authorization from a charity is a good idea if it's straightforward enough, but i don't think we'll need it. people love cupcakes!

oh p.s. if you guys are on facebook you should add me so we can organize an event once we have the details sorted. it's the best way to get the word out far and wide. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/miche … ef=profile

I didn't hear from the uni today so it'll probably be early next week that I get a response, but the more I think about I don't think we will have any problems. I posted about this on my facebook and already a couple of people (who don't live in Vancouver) have offered cash donations for ingredients! Yay!
I'm getting constant updates from my sister about what oxfam is doing, so I'd feel great about donating to the coalition, but we should definitely look into the "matching".
I'm making the salted caramel pecan bars from Vegan Cookies Invade for sure. They'll convert people!
So here's where all you silent Vancouver PPKers jump on in! ![]()

Hey! I really haven't been checking Internet things lately...possibly a good thing sometimes but now I'm glad I did. I'm not sure about baking things myself, but I'll be up for manning a booth or whatever when I don't have classes.
Fishelle I added you! I think a Facebook event would be a great way to pass on the details to other people.
I know nothing about bake sales or of dealing with SUB and university stuff, but if you need any help with anything Vijita, let me know and I'll try to help!
Offline
joobs! it would be great if you could hang out. and we can use all your ubc contacts to spread the word.
Offline
Yeah joobs, we can totally use whatever help you have time to give! It'll be nice to see you again too!

Damn, why didn't I read this earlier?! I'd love to help out (you guys know how much I love baking!), but I'm going to be doing research in California between Jan. 27 and 31, so if you guys are having the bake sale on the 29 then I'll be missing out...

We could push it back if it works better for people? I want there to be pistachiorose baked goods (baklava! nanaimo bars!!) I hope to hear from UBC tomorrow, I'll probably just go in person and talk to them. Another option could be asking Radha if they'd like to get in on it, or at least provide the space. They're pretty into community giving, and I'm writing a glowing review of them for Beyond Robson so they owe me one! ![]()
ETA...shiitake guys...I just realized that I commited to cater for a reading on the 28th. That wouldn't leave me any time for baking...maybe we can push it back a week??

well me and josh are both pretty much free whenever and it would be great if pistachiorose could join in so the week after should be just fine. we can't really make any set plan until we find a venue anyways.
Offline
Yay! If we do do it on a Friday, I won't be able to spend much time at the table (I have class all day on Friday only) but I'll totally bake a bunch of stuff for it. If it's any other day of the week then I'll be able to spend a morning or afternoon there.
